Descendants of James E Chandler born 1814 in South Carolina, USA
CFA Chapter 15 is one of the less frequently encountered Chandler lines. Our earliest
known ancestor is James Evan Chandler, born in 1813 in the Darlington District of
South Carolina. We don’t know with any certainty who his parents were. You can find
many different versions of his information across the internet, but we have few solid
records to help. What we DO know about James E. is that he married Ellenor Jane
Norwood and soon left South Carolina, farming his way across the South. He shows up
in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, and possibly even in Arkansas.
Why is it so difficult to find records that are relatively recent, genealogically speaking?
There are surprisingly few reliable records from before the mid-1800s in parts of the
Deep South. In many cases, records weren’t reliably kept, and in cases where they were
kept, they were destroyed by floods or courthouse fires. Much of our information, then,
comes from census records, land transfers, newspaper mentions, family Bibles, or notes
left by earlier researchers.
To get more data to solidify James Evan’s line, we need the participation of more of our
relatives. We need to find those relatives and solicit participation in the Chandler DNA
Project. If you believe you may be a Group 15 Chandler, please reach out to me and let’s
compare notes.
