Historical Sketch of the Dundee Methodist Episcopal Church by Mrs. C. M. Clark
"In the fall or winter of 1832, there was held in what is now Dundee, then Plainville or Harpening's Corners, the first protracted meetings in the Baptist Church.
The meetings were continued for 22 days, and as a result of these meetings and from the first converts and others, the first Methodist Class was formed in the year 1833. The Class numbered but a few members, three Pierce brothers, Abel, Samuel and Abner, Arch. Strowbridge, Thomas Swarthout, Asher Spicer, Nash Sawyer, Dill Sawyer, Isaac Maples, Edward J. Smith, Charles Chandler; these with their wives included the membership.
The preaching was served by circuit preachers. These preachers were hard workers and poorly paid: three sermons on Sunday with a ride of miles between their appointments. The circuit was very large, covering most of Yates County and parts of Schuyler and Steuben."

General Notes: A letter from Elbert's mother in 1855 [I believe date was mistranscribed]: "Elberts baby is dead and they have moved to Fenton." This is confusing as all subsequent letters until 1859 from and to family members indicate he was unmarried,
A letter dated 21 Mar. 1859 to brother George from sister Mat Beach . . ."Elbert is still living in the house with us. He is going to move the first day of April. The boys are going to build him a home this summer. He is getting quite domesticated. His wife and baby are well. He says he is going to write to you as soon as convenient."

Letter 19 Jan. 1860 to Elbert's brother George from sister Mat Beach
"Elbert has moved to Fenton ____ 4 ½ miles from here. He works at his brother in laws dairy ____ he plays in the band and seems in very good spirits. I suppose you know their baby was dead. He was a sweet little thing."

Letter 5 Dec 1860 to brother George from their mother and another from sister Mat Beach.
Linden, Genesee County, Michigan
"Elbert and his wife [Jenny] has been in Lindon about 3 months. Elbert has gone to work for Jo. They are keeping house and they have got a little girl seven weeks old. Elbert's health is not very good."
"Elbert is living in the house with us. They have got a red headed little girl. His wife is a smart industrious woman."

Letter 1 May 1861 from sister Mat Beach to brother George
"I suppose you have heard that Elbert is father to a pair of twin boys. He lives at Fentonville yet 4 ½ miles from here."
Twin sons, Freddie and Lewey living with Delabar and Pernina Burrows family in 1870. Elbert is seen living with another Burrows family without wife or children in same town of Fenton, Michigan,
Wonder if they were relatives of Elbert's dec'd wife Jenney.

Letter Jun 1861 brother George from sister Louise in Lindon.
"Elbert's wife is here with her twins & Pa [Thomas Shannon] has one of them singing __ it & Jennie [Elbert's wife] has the other. They have been crying most all the evening so that I hardly know what I write & my pen is so poor that I can hardly make a mark. It has been nearly three weeks since we have heard from Elbert. He was well & is now in Maryland. I hope you write to him often for it does do him so much good to hear from us all."
Elbert was now serving in the Civil War.

Letter 10 Feb 1862 from Elbert to brother George. Elbert stationed at Camp Broadhead in Maryland during Civil War.
"My wife is at Mothers this winter. The last news I had from them they were all well."

Letter 28 May 1869 to brother George from their mother.
"Elbert has reenlisted."

Letter 8 Apr 1878 to brother George from sister Mat Beach
"Brother Elbert address is Tygh Valley, Oregon. I hear from Brother Elb about every two months. They were all well when I last heard from them. But I judge they are roughing it and are having a hard time of it this first year. He built him a blacksmith shop and went to work his trade. He took up his soldier claim near his shop and is going to make his living off that. His two boys help him, they are 17 years old now."

Elbert is not mentioned in any other letters until he writes to brother George 5 Feb 1893. The impression is that they possibly had some sort of falling out.

E. N. CHANDLER.
Hon. E. N. Chandler is one of Wasco county's representatives in the house. Mr. Chandler is a native of the Empire state, born at Lodi, New York, Nov. 26, 1829, consequently he was 63 years old last November. His parents removed the year after his birth to Dundee, Yates county, on the opposite side of Seneca lake from Lodi, and his father died and was buried there. The subject of our sketch remained at Dundee until he was 23 years old, when he went to Cleveland, Ohio, where he remained a year, working at his trade, ironing carriages. From Cleveland Mr. Chandler went to Oswego, New York, and worked at his trade there for five years. He was married at the age of 28 at Oswego, to Miss Jane Kelsay, who died about twenty-two years ago, leaving two children. Mr. Chandler married a second tune at Felton [sic-Fenton], Mich., on the 14th of February, 1872. with Mrs. Julia S. Parmer [sic-Palmer], and their union has been blessed with one child. From Oswego, New York, Mr. Chandler removed to Fenton, Mich., where he worked for the first few years at his trade. In 1861 he enlisted for the war of the rebellion, and belonged to General Custer's brigade band. He served two years and then returned home. He was town marshal of Fenton for four years; town treasurer the same length of time, and for six years was assessor for the place. The town extended over a considerable territory - was more of a township government. Its assessment roll was larger than the present assessment roll of Wasco countv. In 1876 Mr. Chandler came to Oregon and settled in Wasco county. He located at Wamic, near The Dalles, and engaged in stockraising, blacksmithing, etc. In 1884 he was elected Wasco county's assessor. Some two years ago he removed to The Dalles and had charge of a cooperative store for fourteen months. This burned down in the fire of a year ago last September. Mr. Chandler has been deputy postmaster of The Dalles for a time. Last June he was nominated for the legislature and was elected by between 300 and 410 majority.
Representative Chandler is chairman of the committee on assessments and taxation, and is a member of the committee on railways and transportation. He is working for the repeal of both the mortgage tax law and the clause of the assessment law allowing deductions for indebtedness. He is also laboring for an open river. While Representative Chandler does not talk very much nor very loud, he is not idle a minute, and he makes his work count. He is an able and influential legislator.

G. W. Chandler.
G. W. Chandler, 86 years old, died yesterday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. M. Miller, 1112 East Thirteenth street. Further announcement will be made after hearing from relatives in the west..
Published at a later date. Transcribed as follows:
The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa.
George William Chandler was born in the state of New York, 21 December 1831. He died at Des Moines 12 July 1918, at the age of 86 years. His early life was a struggle for existence, his father having died when he was a boy.
Although he was required to go out and work, his taste for reading and study enabled him to acquire a good general education. At the age of 18, he began his apprenticeship as a potter and for 5 years worked in that capacity to perfect himself. In the trade, which he followed through out all the active years of his life, he became very skillful.
In 1856 he married Elizabeth Jane Moore, and their marriage continued until 1906 when Mrs. Chandler passed away, shortly after their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Owing to the lack of business in his line he left New York with his family and moved to Ohio, from there to Illinois and in 1868 to Moingona, Iowa, where the three eldest children received their education in the public schools.
In 1884 they moved to Des Moines where Mr. Chandler has made his home for the past thirty four years, working at his trade as long as his health and strength permitted him to do so.
During the past few years he has spent considerable time in the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.W. Lindsey (Gertrude), first in Geddes, South Dakota, 1911 and 1912 at San Diego, Calif., and in 1914 and 1915 at Seattle, Wash.
Of the six children born to Mr. and Mrs. Chandler, four girls and two boys, there are now living: Mrs. J.W. Lindsey of Port Angeles, Wash.; Charles H. Chandler of Stratton, Colo.; and Mrs. A.M. Miller of Des Moines.
In character he was sober, industrious, conscientious and very prompt in the discharge of all his duties and obligations. His disposition was quiet and retiring. He has justly earned the rest that comes at the close of a life well spent.

General Notes: OBITUARY:
Many of us and our children learned to read with Edna's Cowboy Sam series or her Tom Logan books. When no other reading books would interest a young child, her stories would break through the wall and entice the young reader to read on. Raised on a farm near Macksville, Kansas, Edna had her first writing published at age 11. Trained in Colorado as an elementary school teacher, her writing and teaching careers alternated and overlapped. Through most of the Great Depression she wrote magazine articles related to teaching or of an inspirational nature. During the early years of their marriage, her husband Joseph worked as an educator with the Department of the Interior and they lived on Indian Reservations in several parts of the U.S. Her surroundings and the people she encountered always served to inspire subjects for her articles and later, her books. It was during her teaching in the San Juan District of Sacramento that she devised stories to hold the interest of her "slow readers". These grew into the Cowboy Sam series. Later these were adopted by the state of California for all elementary schools in the mid 50's and soon spread across the nation. Joseph and Edna travelled to Liberia, West Africa, where they both worked for A.I.D. from 1963 to 1968. Edna acted as a consultant to writers of children's books for schools. While there, she founded a well-baby clinic, and wrote several successful books. The majority of her books were for written children however, three of her 54 published books are directed at adults.
Her constant effort to help others started her research into prison life in the early 1970's. During the research she became a parole advisor and later wrote "Women in Prison" in 1973. The book follows the life of the typical "fish" or new inmate as she is admitted, does her time, and finally is released on parole. The California Institute for Women at Corona, California is what she centered the book around. She later broadened her scope to include all women's penal institutions.
"Chaff in the Wind" is about early farm life in Kansas. Her book, "Lifestyles for the Aging", takes a hard look at options available to older adults. She was listed twice in "Who's Who in American Women", and several times in "Contemporary Authors". In addition to writing, teaching, and raising a family of five, Edna was active in many community organizations such as AAUW, California Writers Club and Delta Kappa Gamma. She served on the El Dorado Convalescent Hospital in Placerville for 10 years. She was active in the Presbyterian Church in Carmichael and later in Placerville at the El Dorado Federated Church. As a local author she spoke to many writers groups and encouraged scores of young writers. Edna died of pancreatic cancer 14 September 1982.
