The Jim Reeves Collection

Jim Reeves (1922-2012), one of our CFA founders, began collecting Chandler genealogy books and reports and preserving them more than twenty years ago. In 2008 he donated to the CFA his amazing collection of research and reference for Chandler genealogy, and we plan to continue the growth of the CFA Library. However much it expands in the future, the heart of the library will always be what Jim Reeves brought together, so, in his honor, the Executive Committee wishes his name to be permanently associated with the library. The formal name of our library is the Chandler Family Association Jim Reeves Library.

Newly Organized in 2012

At the 2012 meeting, researchers had a chance to see the newly-organized library. The Dewey Decimal numbering, the categories indicated by color coded labels, and the catalog program proved useful for finding information. Thanks are due former CFA Librarian Ginny Dunaway Young for her hard work in cataloging and beginning the digitization of the library and to most recent librarian James Chandler for continuing that good work.  In October 2020, the librarian baton was transferred to Donna Fulton.  Most recently, Sanford Chandler has become the CFA Librarian.

Digitization Project

Because most of the items in the library are rare and out of print, they are very valuable to us. CFA officers and the Genealogy Panel work hard to help our members and the public with their Chandler research. We have begun a project to digitize the books and reports in our library for preservation and improved access to the information. Having access to the books in the CFA library throughout the year is important. The digitization project is meant to rectify that. Copyright laws are complex and confusing, but because the digitized books will be limited to use by a small number of CFA officers who will help our inquirers with family history research, the intended restricted access falls under “fair use.”

Library Funding and Growth

We have already raised some money to fund the digitization project by selling a limited number of lifetime memberships in 2011 and increasing membership dues from $15 to $20.

Donation

You can adjust the amount of your gift by changing the quantity after you click “Add to Cart.” For instance, a $100 gift can be multiplied into a $200 gift by putting 2 in the “Quantity” box and then clicking “Update.”

This will be supplemented by surpluses of income over expenditure. We expect these surpluses to grow as our membership increases and costs reduce as a result, for example, of savings resulting from members offering to take email delivery of their newsletter rather than printed and mailed copies. Nevertheless, funding limitations mean that it will take some years to complete the digitization of our bound books. Donations will speed the task and be very gratefully received. Additionally, if you have contributed a hard-cover bound book to the library and have a digital version of it that you would be willing to provide, that would avoid the cost of scanning your book.

We would love to see our library grow. Your family histories are very welcome and are very valuable to us. If you happen to find a book that you think might be an addition for our library, please contact librarian Sanford Chandler at .

All donations will be gratefully received and carefully used. Donations are acknowledged on the Friends of the Library page. Gifts to support the CFA Jim Reeves Library are tax deductible.

A support group for the library, to be called the Friends of the CFA Jim Reeves Library, was announced at our 2012 Annual Meeting. See more about the purpose and criteria for the Friends. Your donations, whether of money or reference materials for the library, will be appreciated. Write up your Chandler family research, with appropriate documentation, and add it to the CFA Library for the benefit of future generations. Financial help will be used for our library digitizing project and to build the library.

Contact CFA Librarian. Sanford Chandler, with your questions at .

Research questions should be routed to the CFA Genealogy Panel. Any research questions sent to the librarian will be forwarded to the Genealogy Panel.

CFA granted 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt status

We are pleased to announce that on September 2, 2017, the Chandler Family Association was granted tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization by the United States Internal Revenue Service. This means that CFA is not required to pay federal taxes and also that charitable contributions to CFA may be tax deductible depending upon the donor’s tax situation. Donors should consult their tax advisors regarding their particular circumstances. Our organization was granted this special tax status because of the educational benefits it provides to the community.
